Shabbaton in Bnei Brak: (Written by Emanuel Shalev - 1st year) The overseas Shabbaton to Bnei Brak was a Shabbos like none other! Close to 100 overseas talmidim piled on to the buses Erev Shabbos morning, and made their way to the holy city - Bnei Brak. They first stopped off at Petach Tikva, where they visited the stunning hospital/community center known as Ezer Mitzion. There they heard from its directors about the importance of Ezer Mitzion and the amazing work they do for the poor, helpless and the sick. They viewed a visual presentation of Ezer Mitzion's work in delivering food, various tools for the sick, and learned extensively about the organization's amazing cancer division. After a tour of the beautiful state-of-the-art building – equipped with a zoo, game room, comfortable rooms for the sick, and a stunning playground – the talmidim hit the streets for a walk around Bnei Brak. The special character of the community was immediately visible, and it was inspiring to see a community built on Torah values.

After checking-in to the beautiful Vishnitz Hotel, those who wished went for a quick tour of the kevarim of the Chazon Ish zt"l and Rav Shach zt"l. Then the talmidim rushed to get ready for Shabbos and davening at the awe-inspiring Ponevezh Yeshiva. There, accompanied by Rav Stav and Rav Feldman shlita, they heard a quick history of the Yeshiva, and davened Mincha, Kabalat Shabbat, and Maariv. It was a truly amazing experience. After davening, they split into groups of two or three, and made their way around Bnei Brak, map in hand, to the homes of different families for Seudat Shabbat, which many say was the second most successful event of the shabbaton. The most successful event, many say, was simply walking around Bnei Brak on Shabbos! To see an idealistic community, where the busiest streets were trafficked by hordes of Shabbat-observant Jews, was one of the most inspiring events of the Shabbos. The Shabbos meals were very educational, allowing the talmidim to experience the life of the Bnei Brak residents, and allowed for very interesting conversation. That evening, many made their ways to the ruach-filled tishes in the area.

After Shacharit on Shabbos morning, Rav Feldman gave a very educational drasha on the topic of Kiruv, followed by a very, very good Shabbos lunch at the hotel. Lunch was followed by Mincha at the shul of Hagaon Rav Chaim Kanievsky shlita, where the bachurim congregated outside his home for a blessing of "Bracha v'Hatzlacha." After resting and Seudah Shlishit, where the bachurim heard a drasha on the parsha from Rav Stav, the talmidim headed off to the home of Hagaon Rav Aharon Shteinman shlita, for some more "Bracha v'Hatzlacha" and a few words of chizuk. They then returned to the hotel for a double-feature Melaveh Malka. They were first addressed by Rav Kasman who gave a Carlebach-style drasha, that was very inspiring. He was followed by Rav Pheuffer, a native Bnei-Brak resident, who recently returned from extended shlichut in South Africa. He explained the importance of learning based on the words of the Nefesh Hachaim. All in all, the Shabbaton was very successful, and as many bachurim from Shana Bet so eloquently put it: "The Best Shabbos Ever." A big Yishar Koach to R. Zvi Davidson, who organized the event.

Rain: The rain began! We thank Hashem for the blessing of rain, and pray that this year should be one of ample water and sustenance.

Public Prayer: Many of the talmidim participated in a public prayer in Kikar Zion on behalf of the Katif settlements, led by Rav Avraham Shapiro and Rav Mordechai Eliyahu shlita. The Rosh Hayeshiva shlita emphasized to the talmidim the need to be sensitive and concerned with the welfare of Klal Yisrael.

Rabbi Mordechai Willig shlita gave a shiur to the overseas talmidim on the topic of migo. He also spoke about the spiritual impact that Eretz Yisrael has on those who come to learn here.

Shabbat in Gush Katif: A large group of talmidim spent Shabbat in the settlement of Katif, guests at the Katif H.S., headed this year by Rav Ari Katz. They were led by the Rosh Hayeshiva shlita, who gave a shiur to the entire community, and Rav Aryeh Stern. On motzei Shabbat, the talmidim had the privilege of hearing a shiur from Rav Yigal Kaminetsky shlita, Chief Rabbi of the Gush Katif settlements. The Shabbat mutually strengthened both the talmidim and the settlers. Other talmidim participated in Shabbat Hevron.

Rain: Israel began saying the request for rain, "vetain tal umatar livracha," on 7 Cheshvan, whereas outside of Israel it is not said until the beginning of December. The poskim rule that talmidim who are here for the year should begin saying it already, whereas one who comes for a brief visit should mention the request in Shema Koleinu.

The Melaveh Malka featured Rav Moshe Lichtman, translator of "Em Habanim Semeichah," "An Angel among Men" (about Rav Kook zt"l), and a new work: "A Question of Redemption." He spoke about zechut avot and zechut Eretz Yisrael, and the merit that Eretz Yisrael provides even for those who seem far from observance.

Week of 18-24 Tishrei / Oct. 3-9
Shemini Atzeret (Simchat Torah) - Bereishit

Simchat Beit Hasho'eva: The Yeshiva again decided to hold its annual Simchat Beit Hasho'eva at Tel Hashomer Hospital, in conjunction with the IDF Rabbinate. The choir of the IDF Rabbinate performed for the patients and their families in the large lobby of the Rebab unit. A succah was set up outside the lobby, and food (including home-baked cakes by the Yeshiva families) and drink were provided by the Yeshiva. Buses were arranged for the talmidim from Yerushalayim, Haifa, and Be'er Sheva. Rav Aryeh Stern related the story of Rafi Yochananov, an oleh from Uzbakistan Russia, whose initial exposure to religion was through KBY's Perach ("Big Brother") program in Ashdod. He was mirculously saved when the post, where he served as kashrut mashgiach, was blown up in the Gaza strip. The occasion was filled with great ruach, and served as a tremendous Kiddush Hashem.

25th Annual Succot Dinner: The first decade of KBY talmidim, foremost amongst them Rosh Hayeshiva Rav Mordechai Greenberg shlita, were the Guests of Honor at the 25th Annual Kerem B'Yavneh Yerushalayim Dinner. The Dinner, which was held in the succah of the King David Hotel, was attended by almost 400 guests, and served as an "alumni reunion" for tens of KBY old-timers. The speakers mentioned the great involvement of founding Rosh Hayeshiva, Maran Harav Chaim Yaakov Goldvicht zt"l, who arrived at a desolate desert area with twelve pioneer talmidim. The first decade of talmidim laid the groundwork of the Yeshiva. They established the "Hesder Program," the Rabbanut and Dayanut Kollels, the Overseas Program, and the Teachers' Training Institute. Their dedication paved the road for the creation of a new Torah movement which now includes tens of Hesder Yeshivot and thousands of Zionist Bnei Torah.

Rav Greenberg shlita acknowledged the good wishes of the other speakers, and requested their continued involvement in supporting the Yeshiva. The Yeshiva's administration then presented him a plaque noting ten years of his tenure. Rabbi Dr. Raphael Posen, who served as emcee, noted the Yeshiva's growth and development under the leadership of Rav Greenberg. Chairman of the Board, Mr. Bernard Hochstein, who also chaired the evening, asked everyone to serve as fundraiser for the Yeshiva and other Jewish causes, and in this way "free the institutions from their dependence on the government."

Rav Yosi Sarid, the alumni representative of the first decade, reminisced of the sense of comeraderie then, which continues even now. This feeling was manifest in the congenial atmosphere of the evening. The unofficial "Elders of Yavneh" choir sang marching songs from the period of the establishment of the Yeshiva, and drew along the entire crowd with their enthusiasm. Formal entertainment was provided by the "Musicalish" choir and the talented youngster, Michael Yitzchaki, and a fascinating multimedia presentation was played in the background. The Jubilee sefer, "Mi'Peirot Hakerem" - which contained close to a hundred Divrei Torah from alumni - was distributed to the dinner guests. Photos from the Dinner are available at the photogallery.

Shemini Atzeret (Simchat Torah): The Yeshiva came to life for Simchat Torah, with most of the talmidim and families returning from their Succot stays. Hakafot were held throughout the day, after Maariv, Shacharit and Mincha. The Rosh Hayeshiva shlita was honored as Chatan Torah, and Mr. Eli Klein as Chatan Bereishit. As customary, the Yeshiva families ate together in the Dining Hall together with the talmidim. On Motzei Yom-Tov, a group of Kollel families and talmidim, went to participate in Hakafot Sheniyot in the nearby city of Aseret, while others joined the city of Sderot in the Negev, which was the target of recent missile attacks. Meanwhile, the overseas students observed the second day of Yom Tov as Simchat Torah, and were joined in their dancing and singing by the Ramim and Avreichim, led by former madrich, Adir Posy
