Purim: After Megillah reading, the Israeli talmidim went to the houses of their Ramim, while the overseas talmidim held a special "Purim shpiel." Everyone then gathered in the Dining Hall for the Purim Chagiga, which featured music, lively singing and dancing, and a skit and video prepared by the shana dalet Israeli talmidim. As usual, Rav Friedman led a group of talmidim at night and in the morning to the Harzfeld Geriatric Hospital in the nearby city of Gedera to read Megillah for the patients and to sing and dance with them.

On Purim morning, people were busy delivering Mishloach Manot to each other and to their Rebbeim. Most of the Israeli talmidim returned to their families for the seuda, while the overseas talmidim ate together in the Dining Hall, and then went out to dance and "participate" in the seudot of the local families. After Ma'ariv many talmidim traveled to Yerushalayim, where they participated in Shushan Purim festivities and joined those Rebbeim living in Yerushalayim for their seudot. To minimize bitul Torah, the talmidim took seforim along with them to learn there.

They davened Kabbalat Shabbat at the Kotel, and had a tish together with Rabbi Dr. Raphael Posen, the chazan for the Yamim Noraim. Shabbat Miketz / Chanukah

Chanukah 5764: Once again, the Yeshiva celebrated Chanukah with shiurim, sichot, dancing, mesibot, jelly doughnuts, and activities. Following candle-lighting in the Beit Midrash, sichot were given by Hamashgiach Rav Avraham Rivlin shlita, Hagaon Rav Zalman Nechemiah Goldberg shlita, and Rav Nachman Ehrenreich shlita.

The Chanukah Mesibah took place Tues. night, introduced by a film about the Yom Kippur war. It depicted the special role played by the Hesder talmidim in stopping the Syrian army on the Golan Heights, preventing them from capturing Teveria. This reminds us once again, as in the days of the Macabees, how we overcame the mighty and numerous with our strong belief in the Almighty. Afterwards, substantial cash awards were distributed to about one-hundred talmidim who succeeded in a test on all of Masechet Ketubot (which was learned last choref zman), as part of the Mifal Bekiut B'Shas Program, in memory of KBY's twenty-eight kedoshim and endowed in memory of Moshe Hagar z"l. Gift copies of Reshimot Shiurim, based on the teachings of Rabbi J.B. Soloveitchik, were also given out. Music at the Mesibah was provided by the "Gachelet Band," comprised of current KBY talmidim, with singing, dancing, and, of course, sufganiyot. Photos of the Mesibah are available at the photogallery.

The overseas talmidim had a two-day program at the Aish Hatorah Discovery Seminar in Yerushalayim. The second year talmidim (who attended the Discovery Seminar last year), went on a tiyul following the footsteps of Tanach. Photos of the tiyul are available at the photogallery.

The day was packed with activities, and, at night, they participated in the Yeshiva's Chanukah Mesibah. They slept overnight at the various families of the Yeshiva, and went the next day on a trip to the olive plantation and oil press in nearby Bnei Darom and to Machon Ayalon (a clandestine weapons factory from the pre-State period) in Rechovot. Hagaon Rav Shlomo Fisher: Kerem B'Yavneh was privileged to host Dayan Rav Shlomo Fisher shlita for Shabbat Chanukah. He gave numerous shiurim and sichot throughout the Shabbat, which were attended attentively by Ramim and talmidim alike. At the Leil Shabbat Tish he answered questions, at which time he strongly encouraged learning iyun. On Shabbat morning he gave a shiur on zmanei hayom, and later in the day a sicha about Chanukah.

Aloh Na'aleh Melave Malka: On the first Motzei Shabbat of Chanukah, 800 overseas bnei yeshiva learning in Israel paticipated in a very enjoyable Melave Malka of Aloh Na'aleh, an organization dedicated to enouraging aliyah. Amongst the speakers were Rehovot's Chief Rabbi Simcha HaCohen Kook, who said that the thousands of students now learning in Israel could make important contributions to Jewish learning in Israel, just as many rabbis and scholars did over the centuries. KBY alumnus Avi Chermon explained why he and his wife moved to Israel. Rabbi Sholom Gold, spoke of what motivated him to consider Aliyah. He said that his late father left him a small suitcase that contained a letter from the authorities in Palestine, dated August 1946, stating that though his application to make Aliyah from the U.S. was granted, the British authorities refused to grant more visa certificates. Making Aliyah, then, Rabbi Gold stated, was "the fulfillment of my father's dream ... It was getting extremely difficult for me to daven and bentch ... You have to rekindle the passion for Eretz Israel so that you too will suffer from that blessed difficulty."

Week of 28 Cheshvan - 4 Kislev / Nov. 23-29
Shabbat Toldot

Yerocham Shabbaton: The overseas talmidim spent Shabbat in Yerocham, a development town in the Negev. On Fri. they hiked through Nachal Chaveirim and visited the observation point of the Machtesh, the "Grand Canyon" of Israel. Madrichim from the Yeshivat Hesder in Yerocham led an educational and emotional program on Shabbat, and explained to the talmidim the situation in the town. Impeccably kept roads lined with palm trees, and areas of modern art, hide the reality of the harsh plight of the town. New Sephardi immigrants who were brought there found their dreams of a "good life" in the Land of their fathers quickly evaporated. High unemployment, along with poor education and religious services, led to the breakdown of the family unit. This led to the breakdown of religious Sephardi culture, and left Yerocham in a pitiful state. Recently, the Israeli government has invested a lot of money in the city, and many good people have come to the town and are beginning to turn things around. The talmidim were joined by Rav Stav, who gave a shiur after Mincha, and R. Zvi Davidson of the Kollel.

Shabbat Horim: The Yeshiva hosted the parents and families of the second-year Israeli talmidim for Shabbat. On leil Shabbat they had a panel discussion with the administration and ramim about life in the Yeshiva and beyond, and left Kerem B'Yavneh impressed with the values of Torah imbued here.

Rav Aharonav, whose in-laws lived in Kiryat Arba for many years, told stories and divrei Torah about Hebron.

Mazal Tov to R. Avi and Inbal Dahan upon the birth of a son.

Week of 7-13 Cheshvan / Nov. 2-9
Shabbat Lech Lecha

Toronto Shabbat and Dessert Reception: The Rosh Hayeshiva shlita and Rabbi Volk, Executive Director of the KBY office in North America, were guests in Toronto for Shabbat Noach, and spoke at various shuls in the community. Close to 250 people attended the 50th Anniversary Dessert Reception held Sunday evening at Congregation Bnai Torah. Those attending enjoyed looking at the 50th Anniversary Exhibit and the multi-media presentation of the Yeshiva and of the honorees. Mr. Eli Klein presented Mrs. Bessie Orfus with the Howard Orfus Memorial Award on the occasion of the establishment of a new endowment at the yeshiva. Mrs. Hannah Schusheim-Beigel, who received the Aishet Chayil Award, addressed the audience in a most moving manner, recalling her experiences from the time of the Holocaust, including her meeting Rabbanit Goldvicht in the concentration camp.

Additional presentations were made to Drs. Joseph and Cheryl Greenbaum (Parents of the Year Award); Daniel Grodzinski, Hersch Kanner, and Rabbi Dr. Moshe Yeres (Yavneh V'Chachameha Awards); to Rabbi Chaim Sacknovitz (Rabbinic Alumnus Award); and to Mr. Eli Klein, Director of Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh, for 40 years of dedicated service. Chazan Yakov Motzen's superb performance added to the special atmosphere of the evening. For a full description of the event, click here. Photos of the event are also available online.

Alumnus in NY Marathon: Daniel Coleman, a recent KBY alumnus from England, participated in the NY Marathon on behalf of Kisharon, a UK registered charity that caters to the educational needs and welfare of children with moderate to severe learning disabilities, and completed the run in 5 hours and 14 minutes.

The first blood drive of the year for Magen David Adom was held in Beit Brainin. Yishar Koach to the organizers and to the all those who donated.

Shabbat Noach

Choref Zman 5764: The Yeshiva reopened for Choref Zman on Sun., the first day of Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan. This completes fifty years of Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh, which opened in Cheshvan 5714. The Rosh Hayeshiva shlita delivered the opening shiur, "The Written and Oral Torah," in which he discussed the prohibition to write the oral Torah and to cite the written Torah verbally. Visit of MK Effi Eitam: Kerem B'Yavneh was honored by the visit of Mr. Effi Eitam, Minister of Housing, and head of the Religious Zionist Mafdal Party. He spoke of the unique role of religious Zionism, whose central ideology rests on the idea that the current State of Israel, with all of its challenges, is, indeed, atchalta de'geula. He encouraged talmidim to be involved in spreading the message of Religious Zionism to the population at large through a program of the Mafdal, Panim el panim. Afterwards he met with the administration and Ramim of the Yeshiva.

The Chatan Torah (Dayan Binyamin Be'eri shlita) and Chatan Bereishit (Rav Zechariah Tubi shlita) held a kiddush for the community.

Rain: Israel began saying the request for rain, "vetain tal umatar livracha," on Motzei Shabbat, whereas outside of Israel it is not said until the beginning of December. The poskim rule that talmidim who are here for the year should begin saying it already, whereas one who comes for a brief visit should mention the request in Shema Koleinu. [P.S. We have already been blessed with rain this season.]

Mazal Tov to Etan and Rivka Roitman of the Kollel upon the birth of a son.
