The Ashkenzim began reciting Selichot (while the Sefardim have been saying since the beginning of Elul). The Rosh Hayeshiva shlita introduced the Selichot with a sicha, "Nation and Individual in the Judgment of Rosh Hashana," and Rabbi Posen, who serves as the Chazan on the Yamim Noraim, led the Selichot.

Parshat Ki Tavo

IDF Chaplain Conference: KBY hosted a conference for 140 Hesder Alumni who are serving as chaplains (Rabbanim Tzvai'im) in the IDF Rabbinate. They heard shiurim from the Rosh Hayeshiva and the Mashgiach shlita, as well as from other noted Rabbanim. After Mincha, Maran Harishon Lezion, Rav Bakshi Doron shlita, delivered a shiur to the entire Yeshiva on the topic, "Shofar: Sounds of Joy and Awe." The chaplains were very appreciative of the shiurim and the warm reception they received at the Yeshiva.

"Kvoda Shel Torah": Yogav Barda, a shana bet talmid from Be'er Sheva, held a seudat mitzvah to celebrate the publication of a sefer that he wrote, "Kvoda Shel Torah," a compilation of sources and chiddushim on the importance and great merit of learning Torah. The date, 17 Elul, coincided with the Yarhzeit of the Maharal and the birthday of the Ba'al Shem Tov and the Ba'al Hatanya.

Week of 30 Av - 6 Elul / Aug. 19-25
Parshat Shoftim

Elul Zman: Yeshiva reopened on Sun., Rosh Chodesh Elul, full to capacity. In addition to a large group of incoming students, Israeli and overseas, almost all of last year's overseas talmidim elected to stay for shana bet (and some for shana gimmel), and the fourth years Israeli talmidim returned from their active service in the army. The Rosh Hayeshiva shlita gave the opening shiur, "Three Means of Kiddushin," in which he correlated three aspects of kiddushin with the three means of kiddushin. He concluded with a sicha, "Elul -- Teshuva and Torah," in which he explained the connection between Teshuva and Torah, and encouraged the talmidim to realize that growth in Torah and spirituality is a slow and continuous process. We wish them all success in their learning!

On 3 Elul, the Yahrzeit of Rav Avraham Yitzchak Hakohen Kook zt"l, the Rosh Yeshiva delivered a special sicha, "'Segulat Yisrael' in the Thought of Rav Kook." He explained that the uniquness of Am Yisrael is in their ability to actively influence and "recreate" the world through Torah and mitzvot.

On Fri. morning, the overseas students traveled to daven shacharit at the Kotel. Afterwards, they walked through the Kotel Tunnels and heard a shiur from Rav Stav. From the Kotel they continued on to Geula and Me'ah Shearim in order to purchase sefarim and other items needed for their stay in Yeshiva.
The Yeshiva was full for Shabbat, with almost every seat taken.

Mazal Tov to Rav Dovid and Rabbanit Kav shlita upon the marriage of their son Shmuel Chaim to Michal Hochman.
