Toronto Shabbat and 50th Anniversary Dessert Reception

The Toronto Shabbat with the Rosh Hayeshiva celebrating KBY's 50th anniversary was a tremendous success. In addition to speaking during Shabbat, the Rosh Hayeshiva gave a shiur at Ohr Chaim on Friday morning. During the course of the Shabbat, a Friday night tish was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hersch Kanner attended by close to 50 people, both men and women. The Rosh Hayeshiva's Dvar Torah was preceded by an introduction by Rabbi Shlomo Gemara, Rosh Yeshiva at Ohr Chaim, who reminisced of his time studying under both Maran Rosh Hayeshiva Harav Goldvicht zt"l, and current Rosh Hayeshiva Rav Greenberg shlita. Hersch Kanner opened the evening speaking of his family ties with KBY, including his brother Emanuel and his two sons, his brother-in-law and his son, who all studied at KBY.

On Shabbat morning the Rosh Hayeshiva spoke during an elaborate kiddush held at the Clanton Park Synagogue on the occasion of the Rosh Hayeshiva's visit to the community. Later in the afternoon the Rosh Hayeshiva gave a shiur in talmud at the shul followed by mincha and seudah shlishit where the Rosh Hayeshiva again spoke on a most interesting topic, an opportunity that over 150 people enjoyed. Rabbi Volk, Executive Director of the KBY office in North America spoke over Shabbat at the Shaarei Shomayim Synagogue. He spoke at the main synagogue under the leadership of Rabbi Shulman and also at the downstairs synagogue, headed by KBY alumnus and Rabbinic Alumnus awardee, Rabbi Chaim Sacknovitz.

Close to 250 people attended the 50th Anniversary Dessert Reception Sunday evening held at Congregation Bnai Torah. Those attending enjoyed looking at the 50th Anniversary Exhibit and the multi-media presentation of the Yeshiva and of the honorees. Eli Klein presented Mrs. Bessie Orfus with the Howard Orfus Memorial Award on the occasion of the establishment of a new endowment at the Yeshiva. Mr. Klein noted the Orfus family's contributions to Kerem B'Yavneh, building both a Kollel apartment house and the Samuel Orfus Educational Center, which includes the Kollel Beit Midrash, classrooms, guest rooms and more. Mrs. Hannah Schusheim-Beigel received the Aishet Chayil Award, accompanied by her grandson Martin Tollinsky, KBY alumnus. Mrs. Schusheim-Beigel addressed the audience in a most moving manner, recalling her experiences from the time of the holocaust, including her meeting Rabbanit Goldvicht in the concentration camp.

Rabbi Volk made the presentation of the Parents of the Year Award to Drs. Joseph and Cheryl Greenbaum of the Hamilton community. Rabbi Volk mentioned how proud the parents are of their four sons who have studied at KBY: Dov, Eliezer, Moshe and Rafi. In his remarks, Joe Greenbuam mentioned that he hopes that next year a fifth son, Ari will join KBY.

The Yavneh V'Chachameha Awards were presented by Director of Public Relations, Urie Lieberman, to Daniel Grodzinski, Hersch Kanner, and Rabbi Dr. Moshe Yeres. All three studied at KBY and have sons who studied there: Alexander Grodzinski, Yehoshua and Boruch Kanner and Yisrael Yeres. Mr. Lieberman also presented Rabbi Chaim Sacknovitz with the Rabbinic Alumnus Award and mentioned that Rabbi Sacknovitz was among the pioneer overseas students, arriving in 1964.

Mr. Aron Frankel, longtime friend of the yeshiva, was honored by making the presentation to Mr. Eli Klein, Director of Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh, for 40 years of dedicated service. Mr. Klein touched many people with his remarks relating to his early ties with the Toronto community, which he noted as being a most warm and gracious community. Chazan Yakov Motzen's superb performance also added to the special atmosphere of the evening. Special thank yous were mentioned in regard to the wonderful chairmen of the event, Dr. Heshy Sturm who ran the evening, and Moshe Bessin, who did a great deal of work behind the scenes on the fundraising aspect of the event.
